The Three Zones You Must Be Able To Navigate Instinctively
Every Practitioner question points to one of three areas in the manual. Once you know these zones, you stop searching and start locating.
The first zone is the principles and practices.
These appear constantly in scenario questions, the trick is not memorising the words but recognising the visual shape of each practice.
Risk has a distinctive flow – Plans has predictable subsections – Quality has a recognisable rhythm.
When you know the shape, you can find the page without thinking.
The second zone is the product descriptions.
This is where most candidates lose marks, the new manual reorganised them, and suddenly nobody can find the Business Case, the Risk Register, or the End Stage Report.
These documents appear in almost every question, so you must know exactly where they live.
The third zone is tailoring and roles.
PeopleCert loves asking about accountability, behaviour, and decision making. If a question feels like it’s about “who should do what”, you head straight to this zone. Once these three zones are familiar, the manual becomes predictable again.
A Tabbing System That Actually Works Under Pressure
Most candidates tab the manual like they’re decorating a Christmas tree. Every page gets a tab. Every heading gets a tab. The result is a rainbow of confusion that slows them down instead of helping.
Your tabbing system needs to be simple. You only tab the things you absolutely cannot afford to search for.
That means the principles, the seven practices, the management products, the product descriptions, the tailoring section, the roles, the glossary, and the index. Nothing else.
When you do this, your manual becomes clean, calm, and fast to navigate. You’ll be amazed how much time you save.
The Lookup Drill That Makes You Exam Ready
Here’s the drill I use with my Practitioner students. It’s simple, and it works.
Open the manual at a random page. Close it immediately.
Then ask yourself where the Risk Management Approach product description is. Now open the manual and find it. Time yourself.
Do the same with the Quality Management Approach, the Issue Register, the End Stage Report, the Plans practice, the Change Control Approach, and the principles page.
Do this five times. Your lookup speed will double in a single day.
This is how you train your brain to navigate the new manual instinctively.
The Lookup Pattern You Must Use During The Exam
When you read a question, your first job is to identify the topic.
Is it risk, quality, issues, change, plans, roles, tailoring, or product descriptions?
Once you know the topic, you jump straight to the correct zone. No scanning. No flipping. No reading entire chapters.
Your tabs guide you. Your eyes look for keywords, not sentences. And once you find the right page, you match the scenario to the manual. That’s where the marks are.
The biggest mistake candidates make is trying to read the manual during the exam. Never do this. You are not reading. You are locating. The manual is a reference tool, not a textbook.

Once you rebuild your mental map, tab the right sections, and practise the lookup drill, the manual becomes your secret weapon.
