Why Scoring 85 Percent on Practice Tests Can Still Leave You Failing the Real Thing.

Candidates score 85 percent on mocks and then fail the real thing, or they bomb the official sample paper and panic. There is a huge worry about whether mock exams predict success and which practice questions are actually accurate.

The exam dump danger of being sold out of date material is real, and people want honest guidance.

I am your host, Dave Litten, and today we are diving into a topic that has cost more candidates their PRINCE2 7 Practitioner badge than almost anything else.

Here is a story I have lived through more times than I care to count.

A candidate, let us call him Jim, messages me two days before his PRINCE2 7 Practitioner exam. He is buzzing. He tells me he has been crushing the mock exams. 85 percent, 87 percent, even a 90 percent on his last run.

He feels bulletproof. He has this in the bag. Then exam day comes.

He sits the real PRINCE2 7 Practitioner paper. 150 minutes. 68 questions. The 10 page scenario booklet. And when the results pop up on screen, he has failed.

Not by much. Maybe three or four questions. But a fail is a fail. And now he is staring at a resit fee, a dented confidence, and the horrible question of how did that happen

I have seen this pattern over and over again as a coach and trainer. The mock exam score mirage is real.

And if you are preparing for your PRINCE2 7 Practitioner exam right now, you need to understand exactly why it happens and what to do about it.

Because your practice score might be lying to you, so let us start with the biggest reason of all

Reason One: The Question Format Is Completely Different.

Most free mock exams you find online are standard multiple choice. Four options, pick one. Simple.

The real PRINCE2 7 Practitioner exam does not work like that.

PeopleCert uses what they call objective testing. That means you get matching tasks where you link roles to responsibilities across a grid.

You get sequencing questions where you have to drag process steps into the right order.

You get assertion reasoning questions where you decide if a statement is true and if the reason given actually explains it.

And you get classic multiple choice, but with a twist. Often two answers look technically correct according to the manual, but only one is the best answer for that specific scenario.

If your mock exams are not replicating these objective testing formats, you are not practicing for the real exam. You are practicing for a fantasy version of it.

That 85 percent on a standard quiz app means nothing when you have never touched a matching grid under time pressure. This is the number one reason the mirage exists. The format mismatch.

Reason Two: The Scenario Booklet Changes Everything.

Your typical online mock gives you a three line question stem and four answers.

The real PRINCE2 7 Practitioner exam hands you a 10 page project scenario booklet first. It is dense. It has charts, tables, stakeholder quotes, budget breakdowns, and timeline conflicts.

The questions are anchored to this booklet. You cannot answer them without extracting the right data from the right page at the right time.

Candidates who score high on short form mocks often fall apart in the real exam because they have never trained their brain to scan a 10 page document for relevant clues while the clock ticks.

They spend five minutes reading a scenario section that has nothing to do with the question block they are on. They get lost in the details. They drown in the noise.

And suddenly that 2.2 minutes per question shrinks to 90 seconds because they burned half their time just figuring out where to look.

If your practice does not include full length scenario booklets, you are not preparing for the real PRINCE2 7 Practitioner exam.

You are preparing for a trivia night.

Reason Three: The Best Answer Trap.

In Foundation, there is usually one clearly right answer and three clearly wrong ones.

In Practitioner, the exam writers are clever. They give you two answers that both sound plausible according to the PRINCE2 7 manual. Both are technically correct in isolation. But only one is the best answer given the specific context of the scenario.

For example, a question might ask what the Project Manager should do when tolerances are threatened.

One option says escalate to the Project Board immediately.

Another says assess the impact and prepare an Exception Plan before escalating.

Both involve escalation. Both are in the manual. But PRINCE2 7 has a preferred sequence. Assess first, plan options, then escalate with recommendations.

The candidate who memorized definitions picks the first one because it feels decisive.

The candidate who understands application picks the second one because it follows the structured logic the exam rewards.

Most free mock exams do not train you for this nuance. They have one right answer and three distractors.

The real exam has two right sounding answers and one best answer. That difference is everything.

Reason Four: The Brain Dump Danger.

This one makes me genuinely angry.

There are websites out there selling so called exam dumps. They claim to have real questions from the actual PRINCE2 7 Practitioner exam. They promise you will see the same questions on test day. And desperate candidates pay good money for them.

Here is the truth.

Those dumps are often outdated, wrong, or based on the old sixth edition syllabus.

PRINCE2 7 introduced new content around sustainability, digital and data management, and the people element. The processes were restructured. The terminology shifted.

A dump from 2023 or 2024 is worse than useless.

It is actively harmful because it trains your brain to recognize wrong answers as right ones.

I have had candidates come to me after failing, and when we review their wrong answers, they are consistently choosing options that would have been correct under PRINCE2 6 but are wrong under PRINCE2 7.

The dump poisoned their preparation. Do not touch them. They are not a shortcut. They are a trap.

Reason Five: Time Pressure Is Not Practiced.

You have 150 minutes for 68 questions. That is roughly 2.2 minutes per question.

But that calculation ignores the scenario reading time. It ignores the manual flipping time. It ignores the moment you freeze on a difficult matching task and lose four minutes staring at it.

Candidates who take untimed mocks at home, maybe with a cup of tea and a pause button, develop a false sense of security. They know the content. They can answer the questions correctly when relaxed.

But the real PRINCE2 7 Practitioner exam does not let you pause. It does not let you Google. It does not let you take a break to clear your head. The pressure changes how your brain works. Decisions that were easy at home become paralyzing under exam conditions.

If you have not done at least three full mock exams under strict timed conditions, with no interruptions, using the official manual as your only reference, then your practice score is not a prediction. It is a fantasy.

Reason Six: The Open Book Illusion.

The PRINCE2 7 Practitioner exam is open book. You can use the official manual. Many candidates hear this and think, great, I do not need to memorize everything. I will just look it up.

Wrong.

If you are flipping through 300 pages to find an answer, you have already lost. The candidates who pass are the ones who have tabbed their manual so that they can navigate it.

Most mock exams do not train this skill because they do not require you to use a physical book. You click an answer and move on.

The real exam rewards manual fluency. Without it, the open book format becomes a disadvantage, not a help.

So What Should You Actually Do?

First, stop trusting generic quiz apps. If your mock exam does not include objective testing formats, full scenario booklets, and timed conditions, it is not preparing you for the PRINCE2 7 Practitioner exam. It is preparing you for disappointment.

Second, get your hands on official PeopleCert sample papers. These are the closest thing to the real exam. They use the right formats. They use the right difficulty level. They use scenarios written by the same people who write the real thing. Yes, they cost money. But so does a resit.

Third, practice with the manual. Tab it. Highlight it. Know where Appendix A and Appendix C live. Time yourself finding specific sections. The manual is your weapon, but only if you know how to wield it.

Fourth, focus on application, not memorization. Do not ask yourself what is the definition of a risk register.
Ask yourself how would I update the risk register given a 15 percent budget overrun and a supplier delay in this specific scenario. That is the skill the exam tests.
